Ngin Chan (L), 61, sits on a rusty wheelchair next to his wife Phork in front of their thatched home. Ngin lost both of his legs during the Khmer Rouge when he joined the Cambodia Army to fight against Pol Pot between 1975-1979.
Phork pushes Ngin across the dusty ground near their home in Kampong Chnnang Province. As well as having lost his legs, Ngin lost his sight three years ago. His wife is his sole carer giver.
Ngin Chan settles in for cataract surgery.
“I want to see my wife's face. I love her so much. She has always taken care of me.”
Australia's Fred Hollows Foundation works with the Cambodian government, to perform eye operations and treatments, and train doctors and nurses in Cambodia.
An eye nurse removes Ngin’s patches a day later after surgery. His wife sits next to him anxiously and waits for the results.
A day after surgery, Ngin returns home to his wife; able to see both his daughter, son in law, and grandkids. Phork is relieved, “now he can take care of himself again and I can work more. I am very lucky I married him."
